Gluten Free Hair Products: If a product is called "gluten free,"
this means that the product's formula
does not contain any gluten.
However, this is not a guarantee - head warnings:
Several of our hair products manufacturing companies are telling us that they have no way of knowing if the raw material used in their product has previously come into contact with gluten, while it was being stored. shipped, or delivered to the manufacturing plant. This means that there is a very small chance that gluten may be present, even though it is not part of the formulation for the product.
Most products manufacturing companies change the product formulas without notification. It is your responsibility to read and verify the label before using to satisfy yourself that the product is still formulated gluten free.
Wheat allergy may sometimes be
confused with
celiac disease, but these conditions are different.
3a-A wheat allergy
generates an allergy-causing antibody to proteins found in wheat.
3b-Celiac Disease is a reaction to,
one particular protein in wheat — gluten — which causes an
abnormal immune
system reaction in the small intestines of people with celiac disease.
The best treatment
for any wheat allergy is to avoid exposure to wheat proteins. One-way
to do this is to substitute Quinoa
(pronounced keen-wa) for wheat
(which has been already been done by
ABBA,
Color Lover,
& others). You should proceed cautiously however.
Why?
Because - if you have a wheat allergy, you may also be allergic to other grains with similar proteins (like Barley, Oats & Rye ... also see Wheat Free Hair Products).
We've been researching the potential harm of gluten in hair products to those with celiac disease. According to the articles we've read, gluten in hair products, like shampoo, should not be harmful to those suffering from celiac disease. Online articles, like the ones we found at MayoClinic.com and CeliacDisease.about.com, both state that gluten molecules are "too large to be absorbed through the skin". What you might have to worry about is if you somehow accidentally ingest the hair products. How could that happen? Well, if you have younger children who have celiac disease, (children also have a higher incidence of allergies to wheat proteins) maybe they could accidentally ingest a strand of hair or even the soap bubbles while they bathe. It really seems to depend on how sensitive you/they are and how great your concern is.
Everyone reacts to different elements in different ways. Some people say that after they stopped using shampoos or lotions that contained gluten, they no longer had adverse skin reactions/irritations. Because gluten is too large of a molecule to be absorbed by skin, they were may/probably having a reaction to a different ingredient in the product and not the gluten.
We're still learning about gluten in hair products and shampoo. If you'd like to pass us any helpful information you may know about gluten in hair products, feel free to email us. There is also a great discussion board about this topic at www.Celiac.com
Roffler Hair Products are essentially gluten free with respect to formulation and ingredients. There is always a remote chance that the raw materials supplied to Roffler, may have come in contact with glutens upon transport or processing. Roffler does not test to insure every batch is gluten free, as gluten is not part of the product formulation or ingredients
